The group exhibition BOOKISH RELATIONS presents artworks together with books, that that the artist selected as related to the work on view. This could be more or less obvious elective affinities, secret correspondences, counterparts by form or content, hazardous (syn-)theses, unexpected encounters or the book, that was read while producing the work. The library that thus came to being is a documentation of critical, political as well as ironic statements on both the own producing and the artworld in general: e.g. Noam Chomsky’s „De la guerre comme politique étrangère des États-Unis“ (selected by Damien Deroubaix), the Encyclopaedia of Parapsychology (selected by Ulla von Brandenburg) as well as the physically absent audiobook „Under Milk Wood“ by Dylan Thomas (selected by Helene Appel), which could be read as comment on the totally different languages of visual art and literature.
The project pursues the group show INKY TOY AFFINITAS (February-April 2007, Cerealart, Philadelphia), that featured works on paper by thirty-one artists from Berlin, Hamburg, London, and Paris. Curator Anna-Catharina Gebbers had invited thirteen artists from these cities to participate with their own works and by inviting artists themselves. These relationships spin a web of intellectual affinities, one that broadens the visual preferences beyond their origins. In the end this playful dance represents mutual appreciation, elected perception and inspiring encounters.
On view are drawings, etchings, collages, paintings, photographs, sculptures and videos as well as books.
The solo exhibition MAUVAIS SANG – SCHLECHTES BLUT by BERNHARD BRUNGS will be shown in a third room. Here for the first time on view is a new body of works, that revolve around more or less fictitious encounters between mainly literature historical personalities. The title “Mauvais Sang – Schlechtes Blut” refers to a poem by Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1819) and locates these meetings in the specific era of symbolism at the threshold to capitalistic modernity. Literary motifs and historical encounters are here transferred to delicately painted canvasses.
Bernhard Brungs (*1974 in Bielefeld) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Düsseldorf with professor Fritz Schwegler. In Cologne he founded the project “aquarellbluten – Kunst Klub Köln” together with Svenja Deininger and Marcus Broecker. His works have been exhibited at Kunstverein Aachen and Kunstverein Braunschweig a.o. He currently lives and works in Berlin.
